Devastation Trail - from the sign:
This one kilometer walk crosses a landscape
devastated by an eruption in 1959. The forest
throughout this area was buried by falling
pumice to a depth of two meters, and trees
were entirely stripped of their leaves. The
vegetation you see along the trail has grown
back since 1959. The pathway in the cinders
is an extension of the former Crater Rim
Drive, which was burried by the eruption.
